Catholic Church Mariahilf: A Baroque Gem in Vienna

The Catholic Church Mariahilf, situated in Vienna's 6th district, is a prominent Baroque parish church with historical and artistic significance. The church's construction began in 1686 under Sebastiano Carlone and was later redesigned between 1711 and 1715 by Franz Jänggl. The unique shape of the church towers is a result of the construction of the underground in Mariahilferstrasse in the 1990's. The interior boasts six chapels adorned with trompe-l'œil frescoes created by Johann Hauzinger and Franz Xaver Strattmann, students of Paul Troger, in 1759–1760. The altar was crafted by J. G. Dorfmeister, and the organ was built in 1763 by Johann Hencke. The original pulpit, designed in 1720 by Antonio Beduzzi, was remodeled in a Classicizing late Baroque style in 1794. One of the highlights of the church is the Mariahilf Picture of the Virgin Mary, a revered image attributed with miraculous powers. The church is also the parish church of the Order of the Barnabites, acknowledging their contribution to the building process. Today, the church is run by Michaelite Fathers.
