Leon Zelmann Park, Vienna Travel Guide

Leon Zelmann Park, located in Vienna's 3rd district, Landstraße, is a verdant escape offering respite from the urban bustle. The park is named in honor of Leon Zelman (1926-2007), a Holocaust survivor and founder of the Jewish Welcome Service Vienna, an organization dedicated to supporting Austrian Holocaust survivors and their descendants. The park's design incorporates a mix of manicured gardens, walking paths, and open spaces suitable for all ages. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls, find a quiet spot to read, or simply relax amidst the soothing sounds of nature. The park also serves as a community hub, hosting local events and exhibitions that showcase Vienna's vibrant cultural scene.Notably, the park is located on the grounds of the former Aspangbahnhof (Aspang Railway Station), from which tens of thousands of Viennese Jews were deported during the Nazi era. A memorial within the park commemorates this dark history, featuring concrete tracks leading to a somber dark box, symbolizing death and oblivion. The park thus serves as both a place of recreation and a site of remembrance, encouraging reflection on the past while providing a space for community and peace.
