Herbecks Ruhe: A Lakeside Memorial

Nestled on the picturesque Halbinselpromenade in Pörtschach am Wörthersee, Herbecks Ruhe stands as a tranquil memorial to the celebrated Austrian composer and conductor, Johann Ritter von Herbeck (1831-1877). This idyllic spot offers visitors a unique confluence of natural beauty, cultural history, and artistic inspiration. Herbeck, renowned for his contributions to Viennese musical life and his roles as director of the Vienna Conservatory and the Vienna Court Opera, frequently sought solace and inspiration in Pörtschach's serene landscapes. In 1878, a year after Herbeck's passing, the Männergesangverein Klagenfurt (Klagenfurt Men's Choral Society) erected a monument in his honor, marking the very place where he found his creative muse. Sculpted by Josef Valentin Kassin in 1879, Herbecks Ruhe serves as a lasting testament to the composer's deep connection with Pörtschach and the profound impact the region had on his work.
