Wasserfall Turiawald: A Hidden Gem in Carinthia

Wasserfall Turiawald is a captivating natural attraction located in Carinthia, Austria. This hidden gem is situated near the Gemeinde Keutschach am See and offers visitors a serene escape into the heart of nature. The waterfall is part of the Turiawald, a forest with a mystical atmosphere and geological significance. The Turiawald itself is shrouded in local legends, adding to the allure of the waterfall. Historically, the forest was viewed with a sense of unease, with tales of mythical Saligen women, witches, and devils said to roam its paths. These Saligen women were believed to dwell in caves and offer advice to farmers, their blessings influencing the prosperity of the land. The Turiawald plateau, where the waterfall is located, features massive conglomerates up to 200 meters thick, underlain by Miocene fine clastic sediments. Calc-tufa formations can be found in the area, created by the precipitation of lime from cold stratified springs. Visitors can explore the Turiawald through a network of hiking trails, though it remains a relatively uncrowded destination. The trails lead to other points of interest, such as the Saligensitze, nischen-like indentations in a rock face said to be the resting place of the Saligen women, and the Racavafelsen, an observation platform offering panoramic views of the Rosental valley and the Karawanken mountains.
