Lankaran Fortress, located in the city of Lankaran in southeastern Azerbaijan, is a historical monument that dates back to the 18th century. Constructed during the Talysh Khanate, it served as a crucial defensive structure. The fortress was built in 1726 and completed in autumn 1727. In its prime, the fortress made a striking impression with its high stone walls and cannons. Deep moats surrounded the structure, filled with water to deter potential threats. Battles were fought from the northern and southern towers. In 1812, the fortress was captured by Russian armies after a bloody battle. Following Persia's defeat, the Treaty of Gulistan was signed in 1813, ceding the northern part of the Talysh Khanate to the Russian Empire. Within the fortress walls were two marketplaces, the Bigger and Smaller Bazaars. In the early 20th century, two mosques were erected in these areas, becoming the city's largest and most significant religious centers; these mosques have survived to this day. Today, the Lankaran Fortress stands as a symbol of resilience and a vital part of the region's history. Visitors can explore the remaining walls and towers, envisioning the fortress in its former glory.
