Arad Fort: A Sentinel of Bahrain's Shores

Arad Fort, also known as Qal'at 'Arad, is a captivating historical site on Muharraq Island in Bahrain. Constructed in the late 15th or early 16th century, the fort exemplifies Islamic military architecture. Its strategic location overlooking sea passages made it a crucial defensive stronghold throughout history. Originally, the fort was equipped with a double wall and a moat fed by wells. The square-shaped structure features cylindrical corner towers with battlements, offering vantage points for surveillance. Inside, a well and remnants of an old Arabic date press, known as a madbasa, can be found. Over the centuries, Arad Fort has been used by the Portuguese, Omanis, and Persians. It served as a military garrison for the Portuguese in the 16th century and later became the headquarters of the ruling sultan under Omani control in 1800. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities has undertaken extensive restoration efforts to preserve the fort's authenticity. Exclusively traditional materials like coral stone, lime, and tree trunks were used during the restoration. Today, Arad Fort is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Bahrain's past.
