Discover more about Monument of Remembrance

The Monument of Remembrance, affectionately known as the Gëlle Fra, stands as a poignant tribute to the sacrifices of war in Luxembourg City. Located in Constitution Square, in the Ville Haute quarter, the monument commemorates the Luxembourgers who volunteered for service in the Allied forces during the two World Wars and the Korean War. The centerpiece of the monument is a 21-meter high obelisk. Atop this obelisk stands a gilded bronze statue of a woman, the Gëlle Fra, holding a laurel wreath. This statue symbolizes an angel of peace and is a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict. The base of the obelisk features two bronze figures representing a fallen soldier and his comrade. The monument was originally erected in 1923, designed by Luxembourgish sculptor Claus Cito. During the Nazi occupation of Luxembourg in World War II, the monument was dismantled, and the statue disappeared. However, it was rediscovered in 1980 and restored, with the re-inauguration taking place in 1985. Today, the Gëlle Fra not only commemorates those who died in World War I but also honors the Luxembourgers who fought in World War II and the Korean War. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city from Constitution Square, where the monument is located. The site is particularly significant on national holidays when ceremonies are held.
