Discover more about Sint-Salvatorskathedraal

Sint-Salvatorskathedraal, or Saint Saviour's Cathedral, stands as the oldest parish church in Bruges, with a history stretching back to the 9th century. Tradition holds that Saint Elooi built a chapel around 646, with the earliest written record dating to 988. It became a parish church in 1086. After a fire in 1116, a larger Romanesque church was constructed in 1127, but it too was destroyed by fire in 1166, though the lower part of the tower remains from this period. Significant transformations occurred between 1250 and 1350, incorporating elements of the Scheldt Gothic style. From 1480 to 1550, the choir, transepts, and ambulatory with radiating chapels were added in the Brabantine Late Gothic style. After the destruction of the Sint-Donatian's Cathedral by the French, Saint Salvator became the city's principal church in the 19th century. The cathedral was elevated to a minor basilica in 1921 by Pope Benedict XV. The cathedral's exterior resembles a fortress, featuring a robust Gothic structure supported by heavy buttresses. The 79-meter west tower blends Romanesque and Gothic elements. Inside, the cathedral houses a wealth of art, including Brussels tapestries from 1731 by Jasper van der Borcht, medieval tombs, a rood loft with an organ, and paintings by Flemish masters like Jacob van Oost and Hugo van der Goes. The treasury displays priceless pieces from the cathedral and the former Sint-Donatians cathedral. Visitors can explore the cathedral's rich history and admire its artistic treasures. The blend of architectural styles and the serene atmosphere make it a unique and captivating destination.
