Mariastern Trappist Abbey, or Opatija Marija Zvijezda as it's known locally, offers a tranquil escape near Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Founded in 1869 by Trappist monks, it holds the distinction of being the only Trappist monastery in Southeastern Europe. The abbey's history is intertwined with the vision of Abbot Franz Pfanner, who sought to establish a place of faith and work. At the beginning of the 20th century, Mariastern was the largest Trappist abbey globally, housing over 200 monks. Today, it is the smallest, with only two monks. The complex includes the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a beautiful example of 19th-century Central European architecture. The church is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visitors can explore the abbey's interiors, wander through peaceful gardens, and purchase artisanal goods made by the monks, including their famous Trappist cheese.
