Discover more about Kula Tara

Kula Tara, a historic tower in Mostar, stands as a silent sentinel at the eastern approach to the iconic Old Bridge (Stari Most). Erected in 1676, it replaced an earlier 11th-century wooden structure and has witnessed centuries of Mostar's rich and often turbulent history. Originally used as a powder and ammunition storehouse until 1878, Kula Tara's thick walls, measuring 3.5 meters at the base, provided security for the surrounding neighborhood. The tower was significantly damaged during the 1991 war, particularly on November 9, 1993, when the Old Bridge was destroyed. The damage included the loss of its roof, some floors, and heavily cracked walls. Following the war, Kula Tara was meticulously restored during the Old Bridge's reconstruction. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to the Old Bridge, showcasing its history, destruction, and rebirth. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the bridge's significance and enjoy panoramic views of Mostar's old town and the Neretva River from the tower's upper levels. Kula Tara is more than just a historical landmark; it's a symbol of Mostar's resilience and a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.
