Discover more about Tašlihan

Tašlihan, meaning "stone inn" in Turkish, was one of three caravanserais in Sarajevo, erected between 1540 and 1543 by Gazi Husrev-bey. This caravanserai provided refuge for travelers and their horses. These large, fort-like structures accommodated entire caravans, securing them within their walls at night. Tašlihan distinguished itself with lead cupolas, a feature uncommon in other Sarajevo inns. Inside the rectangular structure, which measured 47 meters in length, was an open courtyard, often paved with cobblestones and featuring a well or fountain. A wide porch surrounded the courtyard, leading to storehouses. The upper floor housed guest rooms. It is believed that Tašlihan served more for trade than passenger traffic. Unfortunately, Tašlihan suffered several fires during the 19th century, with a major fire in 1879 leaving it in ruins. Most of the remains were removed by 1912, save for wall sections adjoining the Bezistan. Archaeological excavations in 1998, during renovations of the Hotel Evropa, uncovered sections of the foundations. In 2004, the site was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today, visitors can explore these remains within the hotel's summer garden, imagining the caravanserai's former grandeur.
