Discover more about Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures

The Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures isn't a physical building, but rather a symbolic brass line embedded in Ferhadija Street. It marks the spot where the Ottoman-influenced Baščaršija (Old Town) transitions to the Austro-Hungarian architecture. Walking along Ferhadija Street, you'll notice the change in architectural styles, from the oriental charm of Baščaršija to the grand European buildings. This marker embodies Sarajevo's identity as a melting pot of cultures and religions. It celebrates the city's ability to embrace diversity and foster unity among its inhabitants. Within a few steps, you can hear the call to prayer from a mosque and the ringing of church bells. This juxtaposition earned Sarajevo the nickname “Jerusalem of Europe”. Ferhadija Street itself is a vibrant pedestrian zone lined with shops, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The street was laid out in the 16th century and has been renamed several times, but in 1993, its original name, Ferhadija, was restored. The street, the mahala, and the Ferhadija Mosque are believed to be named after Ferhad Bey Vuković-Desisalić, a governor during Ottoman rule.
