Discover more about Tašlihan

Tašlihan, or 'stone inn,' was erected between 1540 and 1543 by Gazi Husrev-bey, an Ottoman Governor, as one of Sarajevo's three caravanserais. This caravanserai provided refuge for travelers and their horses. These structures were large, fort-like inns that accommodated entire caravans, offering merchants and their pack animals a secure place to rest. Tašlihan was more than just a place to sleep; it was a commercial hub. The rectangular structure featured a central courtyard with a fountain, shops, warehouses, and stables. The ground floor buzzed with merchants, while the upper levels provided domed rooms for guests. It is believed that Tašlihan served more for trade than passenger traffic. Master workmen from Dubrovnik also contributed to its construction. Unfortunately, Tašlihan suffered several fires during the 19th century, with the last one in 1879 leaving it in ruins. Most of the structure was removed by 1912, except for the walls adjoining Bezistan. Today, the remains are integrated into the summer terrace of Hotel Evropa, offering visitors a tangible connection to Sarajevo's Ottoman past. Archaeological excavations in 1998 unearthed sections of the foundations, and in 2004, the site was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
