Thamalakane River Travel Guide

The Thamalakane River, running through Maun, is central to the town's charm and significance as a key feature of the Okavango Delta's intricate water system. Formed by the Boro and Gomoti rivers, it carries seasonal floodwaters, sustaining local flora and fauna, and creating a lush environment.This river is a product of the Thamalakane Fault, which began forming approximately two million years ago due to the rifting process that is splitting Africa apart along the East African Rift. The river has no defined beginning or end. The Thamalakane's water flows roughly 40km west, breaking at the Thamalakane Fault and forming the Boteti River. In the rainy season, the Boteti enlivens the Makgadikgadi Pans with biological productivity.Maun developed along the Thamalakane River, sourcing its water from well fields along the Thamalakane and Shashe Rivers. Visitors can enjoy boat trips, observe diverse birdlife, and appreciate scenic views. The riverbanks are ideal for picnics, walks, and photography. Sunset cruises on the Thamalakane are particularly popular. The river also supports fishing for bream and tigerfish.
