It serves as a significant nature preserve, protecting various flora and fauna endemic to the region.Hiking trails wind through the area, catering to both seasoned trekkers and casual walkers. The gorge also holds cultural significance for the local Balete people, who regard the area as a sacred site.Historically, Mogonye Gorge provided refuge for a woman named Mmamotshwane during the Batswana-Boer War in 1852, after whom the largest gorge in the area is named. The Mogonye community, in collaboration with the Department of National Museum and Monuments, constructed the thatched gate entrance and camping site through the Ipelegeng (Self-Reliance) Programme, officially opening it in 2014.
