Discover more about Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro

The Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, or Jardim Botânico, is a verdant escape in the heart of the city. Established in 1808 by King John VI of Portugal, the garden was initially intended for the acclimatization of spices from the East Indies. Today, it stands as one of the world's most important botanical research centers and a stunning public garden. Spanning 140 hectares (350 acres), the garden is home to over 6,500 plant species, including endangered ones, distributed throughout 54 hectares (130 acres). A highlight is the Avenue of Royal Palms, a 750-meter stretch lined with 134 towering palms descended from a single tree. Visitors can explore greenhouses showcasing orchids, bromeliads, carnivorous plants, and cacti. The Japanese Garden, created in 1935, offers a tranquil retreat with cherry trees, bonsai, and koi-filled ponds. Beyond its botanical diversity, the garden features monuments of historical, artistic, and archaeological significance. These include the Visitor's Center, a 16th-century building, statues by Mestre Valentim, and the Academy of Fine Arts Portal. The garden also houses Brazil's largest botanical library with over 32,000 volumes. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Botanical Garden plays a vital role in plant conservation and research. It's also an excellent spot for birdwatching and wildlife observation, with monkeys and marmosets frequently spotted.
