The Monument to the Duke of Caxias, located in São Paulo's Princesa Isabel Square, is a significant landmark dedicated to Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, the Duke of Caxias, revered as Brazil's greatest military hero. The monument stands 48 meters (157 feet) tall, making it the second-largest equestrian memorial in the world.The idea for the monument arose in 1939, initiated by General Maurício José Cardoso to honor the Duke and strengthen ties with São Paulo. An international competition was held in 1941, with Victor Brecheret's design ultimately chosen. Construction began in the shed of the São Paulo School of Arts and Crafts, using bronze and granite.Victor Brecheret, a renowned sculptor, designed the monument, which features a bronze statue of the Duke of Caxias mounted on his horse. The granite pedestal is ornamented with sculptures depicting his victories, achievements, and even his burial, offering a panorama of the Duke's life. The bas-reliefs showcase themes such as Pacification, Caxias speaking to the people of Bagé, Recognition of Humaitá, Battle of Itororó, and the Burial of Caxias.The statue was originally intended for Bandeira Square, but Princesa Isabel Square was selected in 1959. The monument was inaugurated on August 25, 1960, after Brecheret's death in 1955. Today, the Duque de Caxias statue remains a powerful symbol of Brazilian history and military prowess, set amidst the urban landscape of São Paulo.
