Located in the heart of São Paulo, the Mosteiro de São Bento (Monastery of St. Benedict) is a beacon of tranquility and artistic splendor. Founded in 1598, the monastery has evolved over centuries, now encompassing the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Colégio de São Bento (St. Benedict's College), and the Faculdade de São Bento (St. Benedict's School of Philosophy). The current church, a masterpiece of Germanic eclectic architecture, was constructed between 1910 and 1914, designed by the German architect Richard Berndl. The interior was decorated by Dutch Benedictine monk Adelbert Gresnitch, featuring sculptures by Adrien Henri Vital van Emelen and Anton Lang. The basilica's design, inspired by the Beuron art school in Germany, showcases a blend of religious symbolism and artistic mastery. Visitors can attend daily masses, with Gregorian chants performed by the monks. The monastery also offers a bakery with breads, cakes and other treats made by the monks.
