Blackbeard's Castle: A Pirate's Lookout

Explore a historic Danish watchtower with panoramic views and pirate legends in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

3.9

Perched atop Government Hill in Charlotte Amalie, Blackbeard's Castle, originally named Skytsborg (meaning protection castle), was erected in 1679 by the Danes as a strategic watchtower. Its purpose was to safeguard the harbor and Fort Christian from approaching enemy ships. The tower provided Danish soldiers with a crucial vantage point to spot potential threats. While the infamous pirate Edward Teach, or Blackbeard, did sail the Caribbean in the early 18th century, solid evidence linking him to the tower is scarce. Popular lore suggests he used it as a lookout for his piratical activities. Today, a statue of Blackbeard stands outside the castle, offering tourists a photo opportunity. Visitors can explore the historic grounds, which include several landmark properties and manor houses dating back to the 17th century. These include Villa Notman, Haagensen House, and Hotel 1829, showcasing West Indian mahogany furniture. The complex also features lush tropical gardens, terraces, and the famous 99 Steps. Blackbeard’s Castle is one of only a few 17th-century structures remaining on St. Thomas.
