The Grande Mosquée de Bobo-Dioulasso is an iconic symbol of Islamic architecture and culture in Burkina Faso. Constructed in the late 19th century, around 1880, the mosque exemplifies Sahelian architecture with its adobe structure, wooden pillars, and a minaret. Imam Sakidi Gaoussou Sanou, who shared a Quranic teacher with Almami Samory Touré, initiated its construction. According to local guides, the construction took about ten years. The mosque's design features a rectangular layout with longer north and south facades. A dominant tower on the east marks the mihrab and qibla, while a second tower on the north serves as a minaret. The exterior walls on the east end have large buttresses, with smaller ones on the west. Inside, an open court leads to a prayer hall. The wooden beams projecting from the structure, known as toron, serve as both support and scaffolding for repairs. The mosque can accommodate over 800 people. The layout includes separate areas for young women, older women, and men, with the back rows reserved for important figures assisting the Imam. The mosque is maintained through community efforts, with Muslims, Christians, and animists participating in renovations, especially after the rainy season. This unity underscores the mosque's significance as a source of pride and a symbol of community cohesion.
