Tilden Regional Park, often called Tilden Park, is a vast and varied landscape nestled in the Berkeley hills. As one of the East Bay Regional Park District's original parks, opened in 1936, Tilden has become a cherished destination for generations. The park's 2,079 acres encompass everything from tranquil forests and grassy meadows to developed attractions, offering something for everyone. History buffs will appreciate the park's rich past. Originally home to the Ohlone Native Americans, the land was later used for ranching before becoming a park. During the New Deal era, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) played a crucial role in developing the park's infrastructure, building roads, trails, and iconic stone structures like the Lake Anza dam and the Brazilian Room. During World War II, part of the park was even used as a radio station and anti-aircraft site. Today, Tilden Regional Park is a hub of activity. Families can enjoy a ride on the Herschell-Spillman Merry-Go-Round, a beautifully restored antique carousel. The Redwood Valley Railway offers scenic rides on a miniature steam train. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Regional Parks Botanic Garden, home to a vast collection of California native plants. Lake Anza provides a sandy beach for swimming and picnicking. The Tilden Nature Area offers miles of hiking trails and a chance to observe wildlife around Jewel Lake. Golfers can tee off at the Tilden Park Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course designed by William Park Bell. With its stunning views, diverse attractions, and rich history, Tilden Regional Park offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
