    Discover more about Stuart Collection

The Stuart Collection at UC San Diego redefines the museum experience, inviting visitors to discover contemporary art interwoven with the everyday life of a bustling university campus. Established in 1981, the collection distinguishes itself through its commitment to site-specific commissions. Rather than acquiring existing sculptures, the Stuart Collection invites renowned artists to create original works that respond to the unique characteristics of the UCSD landscape and architecture. This innovative approach has resulted in a diverse and thought-provoking collection of over 20 permanent installations scattered across the 1,200-acre campus. As you explore the grounds, you'll encounter sculptures nestled amidst eucalyptus groves, perched atop buildings, and integrated into plazas and walkways. This integration challenges conventional notions of public art, transforming the entire campus into an engaging and interactive art space. The collection's origins lie in the vision of James Stuart DeSilva, a businessman and philanthropist who believed in the power of art to enrich lives. DeSilva partnered with UC San Diego to establish a collection that would be accessible to all, regardless of their background or familiarity with art. His vision was brought to life by Mary Beebe, the Collection's first director, who championed the idea of commissioning site-specific works and fostering collaborations between artists and the university community. Among the most iconic works in the Stuart Collection is Niki de Saint Phalle's "Sun God," a vibrant and whimsical sculpture that has become a beloved symbol of the university. Other notable installations include Robert Irwin's "Two Running Violet V Forms," which playfully interacts with light and space, and Bruce Nauman's "Vices and Virtues," a thought-provoking commentary on human nature. Do Ho Suh's "Fallen Star" is another standout piece, a small house that appears to have crash-landed on top of the Jacobs School of Engineering. The house is open for public tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, offering a surreal and disorienting experience as visitors navigate its tilted floors and skewed perspectives. The work explores themes of home, displacement, and cultural identity. Exploring the Stuart Collection is like embarking on a treasure hunt, with each artwork offering a unique and unexpected encounter. Download a map or use the mobile app to guide your journey, or simply wander the campus and allow yourself to be surprised by the art you discover. Be sure to check the Stuart Collection website for information on guided tours, artist talks, and other special events. The Stuart Collection is more than just a collection of sculptures; it's a dynamic and evolving art experience that reflects the creativity and intellectual curiosity of UC San Diego. Whether you're an art aficionado or simply looking for a unique way to explore the campus, the Stuart Collection is sure to inspire and delight.
