Harper's Topiary Garden: A Whimsical Oasis in San Diego

Discover a whimsical world of sculpted greenery at Harper's Topiary Garden, a unique and enchanting San Diego treasure. A must-see for garden and art lovers!

4.5

Harper's Topiary Garden is a captivating display of horticultural artistry located in the Middletown neighborhood of San Diego. This unique garden, the creation of Edna and Alex Harper, features over 50 life-sized plant sculptures meticulously shaped by hand. What began as a dislike for ordinary shrubbery has evolved into a whimsical landscape inspired by the Harpers' travels around the world. Edna, often referred to as "Edna Scissorhands," spends hours each day maintaining the garden, with assistance from her husband Alex and their gardener. The sculptures include a diverse array of figures, from animals and geometric shapes to famous landmarks and cultural icons. Visitors can spot elephants, pyramids, a surfer, a Buddha, and many other surprising creations. Unlike many topiary gardens that use wire frames, the Harper's sculptures are shaped entirely from solid foliage. Visiting Harper's Topiary Garden is a quick but delightful experience. The garden is located on a hillside, offering views of the city and airport. While visitors cannot enter the garden itself, they are welcome to view and photograph the display from the sidewalk. The garden is open 24/7, allowing visitors to appreciate the artistry at any time. The Harpers simply ask that guests be respectful of their property and the surrounding neighborhood.
