Ocean Beach: San Francisco's Wild Pacific Frontier

Experience San Francisco's untamed side at Ocean Beach: a stunning Pacific coastline perfect for walks, surfing, and dramatic sunsets.

4.7

Ocean Beach, bordering the Pacific Ocean, stretches for 3.5 miles along the western edge of San Francisco, from the Cliff House south to Fort Funston. This vast expanse of sand and dunes offers a raw, untamed experience of the Pacific's power. Originally part of the undeveloped "Outside Lands," Ocean Beach began to draw visitors in the late 19th century with the arrival of steam railroads and attractions like the Cliff House, Sutro Baths, and Playland at the Beach. While Playland is gone, and the Sutro Baths are ruins, Ocean Beach retains its appeal as a place to connect with nature. Today, Ocean Beach is popular for seaside drives, brisk jogs, and sunset walks. The beach is also one of the Bay Area's top surfing spots, attracting experienced surfers who brave the strong currents and cold water. However, swimming is strongly discouraged due to dangerous rip currents. Visitors can enjoy bonfires in designated fire rings, explore the nearby Golden Gate Park, or visit the historic Cliff House, which is expected to reopen in 2025. The Outer Sunset Farmer's Market & Mercantile is also a short drive away. Keep an eye out for the Western Snowy Plover, a threatened species that rests on the beach in winter. At the foot of Ortega Street during very low tides, the ribs of the ship King Philip, which ran aground in 1878, can sometimes be seen.
