Discover more about Ulistac Natural Area

Ulistac Natural Area, the last 40 acres of undeveloped land in Santa Clara, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The area was once a village of the Ohlone people, known as Ulistac, meaning "place where baskets are woven". For over 1,000 years, the Ohlone thrived here, utilizing the area's abundant natural resources. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the land transitioned through various uses, including incorporation into Mission Santa Clara, becoming part of a Mexican rancho, and later farmland. By the 20th century, it was transformed into a golf course until 1988. Recognizing the need to preserve the area's natural heritage, the City of Santa Clara acquired the land in the 1970s, designating it as a nature preserve. Today, Ulistac Natural Area showcases seven distinct natural habitats, including grasslands, coastal scrub, oak savanna, riparian woodland, sycamore woodland, oak woodland, and wetlands. Visitors can explore nearly two miles of flat, well-maintained trails, perfect for walking, birdwatching, and nature study. The park is home to over 180 species of birds and a diverse array of native plants, making it a popular destination for birders and nature enthusiasts. Interpretive panels along the trails provide insights into the area's natural and cultural history. While Ulistac Natural Area offers a tranquil escape, it's important to note that there are no restrooms, drinking water, or picnic facilities within the natural area itself. However, these amenities are conveniently located across the street in Lick Mill Park.
