Discover more about Merced Grove

Merced Grove, nestled in Yosemite National Park, offers a tranquil alternative to the park's more bustling sequoia groves. As the smallest of Yosemite's three giant sequoia groves, it hosts approximately 20 mature giant sequoias. The grove is accessible via a 3-mile round trip hike. The trail follows an old road that descends into the Merced Grove, making the return trip a moderate uphill climb. The first part of the trail is relatively flat and easy, passing through a sparse forest. After about 0.6 miles, the trail splits, and a left turn leads to the grove. As you descend, keep an eye out for dogwoods blooming in the spring. Once in the grove, you'll encounter a cluster of towering sequoias. The trail continues past these giants to an old ranger patrol cabin, a relic of the grove's history as a popular stopover for travelers. The Merced Grove Ranger Station was built in 1935 and once served as a summer retreat for Yosemite Park Superintendents. The cabin is a unique example of rustic architecture, designed to blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings. While exploring the grove, be sure to stay on the designated trails to protect the sensitive areas around the trees. The Merced Grove offers a unique opportunity to experience the majesty of giant sequoias in a peaceful and secluded setting.
