Discover more about Tunnel view

Tunnel View is arguably the most famous and photographed viewpoint in Yosemite National Park. Located on Wawona Road (Highway 41) just east of the Wawona Tunnel, it provides a stunning, panoramic vista of Yosemite Valley. From this vantage point, visitors can see El Capitan to the left, Bridalveil Fall to the right, and the majestic Half Dome in the distance. The viewpoint's history dates back to the construction of the Wawona Tunnel, which began in 1931 and was completed in 1933. The creation of both the tunnel and the Tunnel View overlook marked a significant period of design and development within the National Park Service, helping to establish the "rustic design style". The site was deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 due to its exemplary design. Over the years, Tunnel View has undergone minimal physical changes, retaining its original rockwork, circulation patterns, and overall configuration. The viewpoint is accessible year-round and offers a different perspective of the valley with each changing season. Whether it's the lush greenery of spring, the vibrant colors of autumn, or the snow-capped peaks of winter, Tunnel View never fails to impress. It is especially spectacular at sunset or after a storm when the light enhances the granite walls and waterfalls. While Tunnel View is easily accessible, its popularity means it can get crowded, especially during peak tourist season. Parking can be challenging, and visitors may need to wait for a spot. Despite the crowds, the view is well worth the effort, offering an iconic and awe-inspiring glimpse of Yosemite's natural beauty.
