Discover more about Upper Yosemite Falls

The Upper Yosemite Falls Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike to the top of Yosemite Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in North America. The trail, constructed between 1873 and 1877, ascends 2,425 feet (739 m) above the Yosemite Valley floor. The 7.2-mile (11.6 km) round trip begins near Camp 4, following the Valley Loop Trail. The path immediately ascends via switchbacks through oak woodlands, climbing above the trees to reveal vistas of Yosemite Valley's iconic landmarks. Columbia Rock, about a mile into the hike, offers stunning views of Half Dome and Sentinel Rock. The trail then continues to the top of Upper Yosemite Fall, with an optional detour to Yosemite Point for even more spectacular views. At the summit, hikers can witness the powerful Yosemite Creek plummeting down the granite cliffs. The best time to visit is during the spring or early summer when the falls are at their peak flow. However, the waterfall can become a mere trickle or dry up completely by August. Hikers should be prepared for a strenuous climb with plenty of water, especially during the hotter summer months.
