In the late 1950s, Prince Norodom Sihanouk envisioned Sihanoukville as a premier seaside resort, with Independence Beach embodying this vision of autonomy and luxury. The Independence Hotel, inaugurated in 1964, became a symbol of this era, hosting affluent travelers. Although the beach saw a decline during the civil conflict and Khmer Rouge regime, it has since re-emerged as a popular destination.
