Bandjoun Station, established in 2007 by Cameroonian artist Barthélémy Toguo, is a unique center for art, culture, and sustainable development. Situated in the Bamiléké highlands near Bandjoun, West Cameroon, the station is about 3 km from Bafoussam and roughly 270 km from Douala and Yaoundé. At an altitude of 1500m, the location boasts a cooler climate and scenic views. The station comprises two main buildings: a three-story Art Centre and a workshop/accommodation block for resident artists. The Art Centre includes five spacious sections for temporary exhibitions of African art, a basement for meetings and projections, and a reading room. The architecture pays homage to local traditions, featuring concrete pillars and a double-pyramid roof adorned with mosaics and emblems. Bandjoun Station's mission extends beyond art. It aims to develop education and access to African art, promote organic farming, and foster food and energy self-sufficiency. The center includes a coffee plantation and cultivations of banana, corn, bean, and sweet potato. It hosts visual artists, choreographers, writers, filmmakers, researchers, and other creatives from around the world. Bandjoun Station also engages with the local community through agriculture and education programs.
