Discover more about Porte D'entrée Foumban

The Porte D'entrée Foumban serves as a symbolic and literal entrance to Foumban, a city that stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Bamoun people. Foumban, one of Cameroon's oldest cities, has been the center of the Bamoun kingdom since 1394. The entrance gate, while having undergone modifications over the years, continues to evoke the spirit of the Bamoun kingdom. Historically, the gate was part of a more complex defense system established in the 18th century. It served as one of eight entry points to the city. The gate also stands as a reminder of the invasion of Foumban by Fulbe warriors. Over time, the architecture of the gate has been modified, most notably under the reigns of King Ibrahim Njoya and King Njimoluh Njoya. In 2020, a fire destroyed part of the gate, leading to renovations. Today, the Porte D'entrée Foumban welcomes visitors to explore Foumban's royal palace, museums, and artisan workshops. The city is known for its traditional architecture and vibrant markets.
