St. Jude's Anglican Cathedral in Iqaluit stands as a beacon of faith and cultural significance in the Arctic landscape. Formally named the Cathedral of St. Simon and St. Jude, it's more affectionately known as the Igloo Cathedral for its distinctive shape that mirrors a traditional Inuit igloo. This unique design not only serves as a place of worship but also as a symbol of resilience and community spirit. The original cathedral, designed by Ronald Thom, was built in 1972 by local volunteers. It quickly became a beloved landmark, adorned with Inuit craftsmanship, including wall hangings, woven baskets, a narwhal tusk cross, and a soapstone baptismal font. In 2005, tragedy struck when an arson fire destroyed much of the structure. The community rallied, and after years of fundraising, the new St. Jude's Cathedral opened in June 2012. The rebuilt cathedral retains the igloo shape, constructed with fire-resistant materials and incorporating salvaged elements from the original, such as the narwhal tusk cross. Today, St. Jude's serves as the seat of the Diocese of The Arctic, the Anglican Church of Canada. Its parish holds services in both English and Inuktitut, bridging cultures and generations. Visitors are welcome to admire the architecture, experience the serene atmosphere, and learn about the cathedral's role in the Iqaluit community. The cathedral stands as a testament to the enduring faith and cultural heritage of Nunavut.
