Chinko Nature Reserve: Untamed Heart of Central Africa

Chinko Nature Reserve, also known as the Chinko Project Area, is a sprawling 17,600 square kilometer (approximately 7,000 square miles) protected area in the southeastern Central African Republic. Since 2014, the non-profit African Parks has managed the reserve in partnership with the government, working to preserve its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The reserve sits on a volcanic plateau, roughly 2,000 feet (610 meters) above sea level, giving rise to a diverse landscape of savannahs, wetlands and dense forests. This varied terrain supports an impressive array of wildlife. Chinko is a sanctuary for endangered species like African elephants, giraffes, and leopards. Birdwatchers will be thrilled by the presence of over 400 bird species. The Chinko River basin, with its mix of wooded savannah and Congolese rainforest, creates an ecotone that further enhances the area's ecological significance. Once a hunting reserve, Chinko suffered significant wildlife losses due to poaching and cattle grazing. However, thanks to conservation efforts, wildlife populations are recovering, and the reserve is now considered an ecosystem with immense conservation potential.
