Discover more about The Blowholes

Located on the southern coast of Christmas Island, The Blowholes are a testament to the raw power of the ocean. Over millennia, relentless waves have carved tunnels and fissures into the limestone cliffs, creating a series of natural blowholes. During high tide, and when the swell is up, the ocean's force propels water through these formations, resulting in spectacular eruptions that can reach up to 20 meters in height. The resounding boom of the water and the refreshing spray create an exhilarating experience. Even when the blowholes aren't actively spraying, the elevated platforms offer panoramic views of the rugged southern coastline. The area is also a prime location for observing the island's unique flora and fauna, including the famous red crabs during their annual migration. Thousands of crabs migrate across the rocks as the waves crash around them, creating a truly unique spectacle. The 4WD track leading to The Blowholes meanders through lush rainforest, providing opportunities to spot red crabs and other wildlife. A magnificent strangler fig stands near the parking area, marking the entrance to the clifftop walkway. The elevated walkway provides a safe and accessible vantage point for viewing the blowholes and the dramatic meeting of sea and land.
