4.8

Montgomery Reservoir, situated at an elevation of 10,873 feet (3,314 meters), is a picturesque destination surrounded by towering 14,000-foot peaks. Located a few miles north of Alma, Colorado, and near Hoosier Pass, this reservoir is a serene escape into nature's grandeur. Constructed in 1957 by Colorado Springs Utilities, Montgomery Reservoir serves as a vital water source for the city. The reservoir collects water from the Middle Fork of the South Platte River and through the Hoosier Tunnel, which diverts water from the Blue River on the western side of the Continental Divide. The dam itself is an impressive rockfill structure, approximately 1,900 feet long and 113 feet high, sealed with an asphalt concrete facing. While boating and swimming are prohibited, Montgomery Reservoir offers a variety of other outdoor activities. Fishing is a popular pastime, with anglers often reporting excellent conditions and a variety of trout species. Hiking trails surround the reservoir, providing options for all skill levels. A short hike from the parking area leads to the shores, and hikers can explore the 4x4 road on the north side of the lake. The Wheeler Lake Trail on the opposite side offers views of the historic Magnolia Mill and flowing streams with waterfalls. Visitors can also enjoy birding and wildlife viewing, with opportunities to spot marmots, chipmunks, foxes, deer, moose, bald eagles, seagulls, and waterfowl. The area is known for its pristine alpine scenery and the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Interestingly, the town of Montgomery was flooded to create the reservoir, with only the Magnolia Mill remaining as a reminder of the area's mining history.
