Getting There

  • Driving

    From Gunnison, head north on Highway 135. Turn right onto County Road 726. This road provides access to the lower parcel and one of the upper parcels in Steers Gulch. Continue along Co Rd 726, following signs for the SWA. Be aware that roads may be unpaved and conditions can vary depending on the season. Parking is available in designated areas. There are no fees for parking.

Gunnison State Wildlife Area encompasses three separate parcels of land near Gunnison, Colorado, each offering unique opportunities to experience the state's natural beauty. Managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), these areas serve as vital habitats for a variety of species, providing a haven for both wildlife and outdoor adventurers. The lower parcel, a long and narrow strip along County Roads 726 and 749, borders Beaver Creek, offering coldwater stream fishing opportunities. The upper parcels include one along Co Rd 726 in Steers Gulch, and another northeast of McIntosh Mountain, bisected by West Antelope Creek. All three parcels are surrounded by BLM land. Visitors to the Gunnison SWA can engage in a range of activities, including hunting for deer, elk, and dusky grouse, as well as fishing in the area's pristine streams. Nature viewing is also a popular pastime, with opportunities to spot various bird species and other wildlife. The area is particularly stunning in the fall when the foliage transforms into a vibrant display of colors. Camping is permitted only in designated areas by licensed hunters during big-game season, plus 3 days before and 3 days after each season. The Beaver Creek Trail is restricted to foot and horseback travel only. Fires are allowed within containment structures in designated camping areas. The Blinberry Gulch parcel is only open to the public from July 1 to November 30. The SWA is open for public access from May 1 to Nov. 30, and from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset only, except for lawful hunting activities.
