Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center, follow the sidewalk east along Gateway Road. Cross Gateway Road at the crosswalk and continue east on the dirt path towards the Rock Ledge Ranch Gateway. Follow the signs to the Admission Hut. The walk is approximately 0.25 miles and takes about 5-10 minutes. There is no cost for walking.

  • Public Transport

    Take the Mountain Metropolitan Transit bus to the intersection of 30th Street and Gateway Road. From there, walk east on Gateway Road, following the directions as above. A single fare on Mountain Metro Transit is typically around $1.75.

  • Driving

    From 30th Street, turn onto Gateway Road (the main entrance to Garden of the Gods). Take the first left onto the dirt road, passing the Garden of the Gods overflow parking. Continue through the Rock Ledge Ranch Gateway, following signs to the Admission Hut. Parking is free. During peak season, arrive early as parking can fill up quickly.

This living history museum brings to life the experiences of American Indians, homesteaders, and early 20th-century estate dwellers. Explore several historical areas, including an American Indian area, Galloway Homestead, Chambers Ranch, and the Orchard House. Knowledgeable interpreters in period attire demonstrate daily life activities, from cooking and blacksmithing to farming and household chores. Visitors can participate in hands-on activities and witness the workings of a 19th-century blacksmith shop, a barn with farm animals, and a restored apple orchard. The site begins with the American Indian area (1775-1835), continues with the Galloway Homestead Cabin (1867-1874), the Chambers Family Rock Ledge House (1874-1900), the Blacksmith Shop (1890s), and the Sclater Family Orchard House (1907-1909). Each area provides a unique glimpse into a specific era and culture, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of life in the Pikes Peak region. General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs, once owned the property and expanded the irrigation system. Throughout the year, Rock Ledge Ranch hosts special events, including historical reenactments, harvest festivals, and holiday celebrations. These events offer additional opportunities to engage with history and experience the vibrant community atmosphere of the ranch.
