Discover more about Alberta Falls

Alberta Falls, a scenic 30-foot waterfall, is one of the most visited destinations in Rocky Mountain National Park. The falls are located approximately 12 miles west of downtown Estes Park and are easily reached via a well-maintained 1.6-mile roundtrip trail. The trail begins at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead, located along Bear Lake Road. The hike to Alberta Falls is considered easy to moderate, with only a 160-250 feet elevation gain. The path meanders through a diverse landscape of aspen groves and pine forests, offering beautiful scenery throughout the year. In the fall, the changing aspen leaves create a particularly stunning display of color. Alberta Falls is named after Alberta Sprague, the wife of Abner Sprague, one of the first settlers in the Estes Park area. The Spragues built a homestead in Moraine Park in 1874, which later became a lodge for hunting, fishing, and guest ranching. Abner Sprague also holds the distinction of being the first visitor to pay an entrance fee to Rocky Mountain National Park in 1939. Today, Alberta Falls remains a popular spot for hikers of all ages and abilities. The falls themselves cascade down a narrow gorge on Glacier Creek, creating a picturesque scene and a relaxing atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a picnic near the falls or continue hiking to explore other destinations in the Glacier Gorge area, such as Mills Lake, The Loch, or Sky Pond.
