Discover more about Healy House Museum & Dexter Cabin

The Healy House Museum & Dexter Cabin offers a captivating glimpse into Leadville's opulent past, during its reign as a booming 19th-century silver mining town. Perched at nearly two miles in altitude and surrounded by Colorado's highest peaks, the meticulously restored Healy House and Dexter Cabin provide a vivid snapshot of Western life in the late 1800s. The Healy House, a large, white clapboard residence, was built in 1878 for August Meyer, a mining engineer, and his bride, Emma. The Greek Revival home signaled the arrival of domestic comforts to the rugged mining camp. Visitors can explore the house's lavish Victorian furnishings, collected by Leadville pioneers, including objects belonging to Horace and Augusta Tabor. The lush gardens surrounding the house have been restored in Emma Meyer's honor, featuring Victorian urns, statuary, garden benches, and a gazebo. Adjacent to the Healy House stands the Dexter Cabin, a surprisingly plush 1879 log cabin that was the Leadville residence of mining investor and businessman James V. Dexter. By the time he built the cabin, Dexter was already a wealthy man and enjoyed a variety of activities. The cabin boasts black walnut and white oak floors and an array of Victorian artifacts. Together, the Healy House and Dexter Cabin offer an engaging experience for history buffs and casual tourists alike. Knowledgeable staff guide visitors through the homes, sharing stories of the people who lived and shaped Leadville.
