Discover more about River Highlands State Park

River Highlands State Park, a 177-acre public recreation area in Cromwell, Connecticut, offers a unique perspective of the Connecticut River. The park's bluffs, rising 150 feet above the water, provide outstanding views up and down the river. Originally purchased by the state in 1995 and opened in 2001, the land has a history tied to the river. Sailors once noted the area for its quick winds, calling it 'the blow hole'. This phenomenon, caused by the river bend, has since been silenced by silting. Today, the park features hiking trails for all skill levels, including easy to moderate trails suitable for families. These trails wind through forests and along the bluffs, offering scenic vistas. Mountain biking is also a popular activity. The trails lead to high overlooks with views of the river. For those seeking a longer stay, River Highlands is one of only four state parks offering primitive camping for boaters. Two campsites are available along the Connecticut River, accessible only by canoe or kayak. Visitors can also enjoy birdwatching and picnicking. Picnic tables near the riverside provide a relaxing spot to unwind amidst the natural surroundings.
