Cove Island Park: Stamford's Coastal Gem

Explore sandy beaches, scenic trails, and diverse wildlife at Stamford's Cove Island Park, a natural oasis on Long Island Sound.

4.6

Cove Island Park, an 83-acre expanse in Stamford's Cove neighborhood, offers a diverse blend of recreation and natural beauty along the Long Island Sound. The park's history is as rich as its landscape. Originally, the area was grazing land, later becoming the site of the Stamford Manufacturing Company in the 1800s, producing dye extracts. A devastating fire in 1919 destroyed the factory, paving the way for the island's transformation into a park. Today, Cove Island Park features two sandy beaches, a one-mile walk/run trail, a playground, and a rollerblade/cycling path. The Terry Conners Ice Rink sits near the entrance, offering winter skating. The park also includes a wildlife sanctuary recognized by the Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area, home to over 287 bird species and 50 butterfly species. Visitors can explore various habitats, including estuary, pond, forest, and salt marsh. Points of interest include Stamford's September 11th Memorial and the SoundWaters Coastal Education Center, which offers a small aquarium and environmental education programs. The park provides accessible views of the water and various facilities, though some areas may have limited accessibility. Whether you're looking to relax on the beach, observe wildlife, or enjoy outdoor activities, Cove Island Park offers something for everyone.
