Ambassador Theatre: A Broadway Landmark

4.5

The Ambassador Theatre, located at 219 W 49th St in New York City, stands as a testament to Broadway's rich history. Designed by Herbert J. Krapp and opened in 1921, it's one of four theaters constructed by the Shubert brothers during their post-World War I expansion. The theater's architecture is notable for its simple exterior and unique hexagonal auditorium, a design choice resulting from the challenging diagonal layout of its plot. The interior, however, showcases elaborate Adam-style plasterwork, a favorite motif of Krapp. Initially hosting operettas and musical comedies, the Ambassador Theatre shifted to dramatic productions in the late 1930s. For a period, it served as a broadcasting studio for CBS and later as a film and television studio, even being known as the Ambassador Tele-Theater. In 1956, the Shuberts reclaimed the theater, restoring it to its Broadway roots. Today, the Ambassador Theatre is celebrated as the long-standing home of the musical 'Chicago' since 2003, marking it as the longest-running American musical on Broadway. The theater itself was designated a New York City Landmark in 1985, cementing its place in the city's cultural heritage. With a seating capacity of approximately 1,125, the Ambassador offers an intimate Broadway experience.
