Catarata Río Celeste: A Celestial Waterfall

Discover the stunning turquoise waters of Catarata Río Celeste in Costa Rica's Tenorio Volcano National Park. A moderate hike leads to breathtaking views.

4.8

Catarata Río Celeste, or the Celeste River Waterfall, is a mesmerizing natural wonder located within the Tenorio Volcano National Park in the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica. The main draw is the river's distinctive sky-blue color, a phenomenon caused by the mixing of volcanic minerals. This creates an ethereal landscape that feels straight out of a fairy tale. The hike to the waterfall is a moderate 5.5 km journey through dense rainforest. The trail is well-maintained, though it can get muddy, especially during the rainy season (May to November). Along the way, hikers will encounter several noteworthy sights, including the Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon), a pool of intensely blue water; Los Borbollones, where volcanic gases bubble to the surface; and El Teñidero, the precise spot where two rivers converge, causing the chemical reaction that gives Río Celeste its unique color. The final descent to the base of the 30-meter waterfall involves navigating a steep staircase. Although swimming is prohibited in the immediate vicinity of the waterfall and within the national park, a free public swimming area exists just outside the park's boundaries. According to local legend, the Rio Celeste's unique color came about when God was painting the sky and washed his brushes in the river.
