The Sanctuaire Marial National, dedicated to Notre-Dame d'Afrique (Our Lady of Africa), stands as a beacon of faith and architectural innovation in Abidjan. Located in the commune of Attécoubé, it is the primary Marian pilgrimage site in Côte d'Ivoire. The shrine's story began in the 1970s when local Christians in Cité Fairmont lacked a nearby parish. Cardinal Bernard Yago envisioned a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and construction commenced in 1985, with significant financial support from President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. The Sanctuaire Marial was inaugurated on February 1, 1987. The shrine's architecture, designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, is a striking example of modern religious architecture. A 53-meter conical bell tower dominates the site, featuring reinforced concrete and blue-painted helical roofs designed for natural ventilation. The tower is adorned with a 6-meter stained glass window depicting the Virgin Mary in Assumption. Inside, the main church can accommodate 800 people. The sanctuary also features artwork by Paul Siaka Coulibaly, including sculptures of the Virgin Mary represented as an Ivorian woman and scenes of Calvary. The Sanctuaire Marial is more than just a place of worship; it's a center for spiritual devotion and pilgrimage, attracting over 3,000 pilgrims each week. Pilgrims and visitors come to strengthen their faith, seek solace, and admire the unique architecture. The shrine is open daily, offering regular services and maintaining open access for visitors. Masses are held on Sundays at 11:00 AM, and from Monday to Friday at 6:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Saturdays offer masses at 6:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 6:30 PM. The shrine also provides spiritual guidance and activities, including Eucharistic adoration and evenings of prayer.
