Monkodonja, often called the 'Mycenae of Istria,' is a captivating archaeological site located approximately 5 km southeast of Rovinj. This Bronze Age settlement, dating back to 1800-1200 BC, offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life in the region. Occupying a hilltop 81 meters above sea level, Monkodonja was strategically fortified with three concentric walls, some stretching a kilometer long, 3 meters wide and at least 3 meters tall. These walls, constructed using a dry-stone technique, showcase the advanced building skills of the settlement's inhabitants. Within these walls, the settlement was divided into three distinct areas: the acropolis (upper class), the upper town (artisans), and the lower town (agriculturists). It's estimated that around 1,000 people lived within the well-organized community. Excavations have revealed much about the daily life and culture of Monkodonja's residents. Houses, separated by streets and passages, featured hearths and locally crafted pottery, as well as ceramics from the eastern Mediterranean, indicating trade and cultural exchange with Mycenaean Greece. Numerous metal objects discovered at the site suggest a wealthy population. The settlement also includes burial tumuli (grave mounds) with stone chests containing amber, bronze jewelry, and faience pearls. Monkodonja was mysteriously abandoned around 1200 BC. Today, Monkodonja is recognized as an important cultural destination in Istria, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore a significant prehistoric site and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
