Landhuis Ascencion: A Colonial Gem

Landhuis Ascencion, known locally as 'Asunshon,' is a former plantation house in Curaçao dating back to 1672. Founded by Jurriaan Janszoon Exteen, the landhuis is named after the former Caquetío village, Pueblo de la Madre de Dios Ascención, that once stood on the same site. The plantation initially cultivated maize, cotton, and beans, benefiting from the area's relatively abundant water resources. In the 19th century, the focus shifted to cattle breeding, but this proved less successful. In the early 20th century, Landhuis Ascencion served as the residence of Cola Debrot, a prominent writer and politician, who immortalized the estate in his novel 'My Sister the Negress'. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the Curaçao Monuments Foundation acquired the plantation and landhuis in 1960. After extensive restoration, it was leased to the Royal Dutch Navy in 1965, serving as a training center. Today, Landhuis Ascencion functions as a multifaceted cultural and historical center. It houses a museum showcasing the plantation's history and the lives of its inhabitants, offering visitors a glimpse into Curaçao's colonial past. The landhuis also hosts events, workshops, and exhibitions, fostering a vibrant connection between the past and present. The building itself is architecturally significant, featuring two impressive corner towers and galleries surrounding a rectangular central section. Its elevated position provided cooling trade winds and a strategic overview of the plantation lands. Visitors can explore the grounds, learn about the site's historical significance, and enjoy the serene surroundings. Every first Sunday of the month, Landhuis Ascencion hosts an open house with a bustling artisan market, live music, traditional dance, and local cuisine. Guided tours are available every Thursday morning, providing deeper insights into the landhuis's history and architecture.
