Discover more about Playa Grandi

Playa Grandi, also called Playa Piskadó (meaning Fisherman's Beach in Papiamentu), is located on the western coast of Curaçao, near the village of Westpunt. This unique destination offers an authentic and local experience, characterized by a small, pebbly cove and the activity of local fishermen. What sets Playa Grandi apart is the opportunity to swim and snorkel alongside sea turtles in their natural habitat. For years, fishermen have cleaned their catch on the pier, discarding scraps into the water. This unintentional practice has created a haven for sea turtles, who gather in the area for an easy meal. The turtles, mostly juvenile green sea turtles, are accustomed to humans and often swim close to snorkelers. You might even spot hawksbill turtles. Remember that turtles on Curaçao are protected by law and should not be touched or interfered with. Beyond the turtles, Playa Grandi offers a glimpse into Curaçao's local culture. Watch fishermen mend nets, unload boats, and sell fresh catch. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, contrasting with the island's more touristy beaches. The beach offers essential amenities, including showers, toilets, and eateries serving local delicacies. Historically, Playa Grandi was recognized as a weak spot in the island's defenses in the 1770s. Today, its significance lies in its vibrant marine life and the relationship between local fishermen and sea turtles.
