Discover more about Playa Forti

Playa Forti, located near the village of Westpunt in Curaçao, is a small beach with a big reputation. Known for its stunning natural beauty and thrilling cliff jumping opportunities, it's a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking a unique Caribbean experience. The beach itself is characterized by its coarse, dark sand mixed with small pebbles, a departure from the powdery white sands found on other Curaçao beaches. This gives Playa Forti a more rugged, natural feel. The crystal-clear turquoise waters are inviting for a refreshing swim, although the rocky shoreline requires caution when entering the sea. What truly sets Playa Forti apart are the towering cliffs that frame the beach. These cliffs offer breathtaking panoramic views of the island's western tip, with fishing boats dotting the horizon and the endless expanse of the Caribbean Sea stretching out before you. The sunsets here are particularly spectacular, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. For the adventurous, Playa Forti is famous for its cliff jumping spot. A narrow path leads to a platform perched atop the cliff, approximately 40 feet (12 meters) above the water. From here, daredevils can take the plunge into the deep, clear waters below. While the cliff jump is a thrilling experience, it's important to exercise caution and assess the conditions before jumping. Jumping is at your own risk, as there are no lifeguards on duty. If cliff jumping isn't your cup of tea, Playa Forti still offers plenty to enjoy. The snorkeling along the cliffs is quite good, with opportunities to see colorful fish and coral formations. You can also take a leisurely swim or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun. The gentle waves make it a suitable spot for families with children. Playa Forti also has a rich history. In 1774, Commissioner Jean Rodier documented the existence of a fort at this location, built during the Napoleonic era to defend merchant ships. In 1958, Dutchman Leslie Jenkin built a restaurant on the foundations of the old fort. The iconic cannons still grace the entrance of the restaurant to this day. Westpunt itself is a charming village with a laid-back atmosphere. Unlike other parts of Curaçao, Westpunt was historically a free region, where freed slaves settled. This gives the area a unique cultural heritage. Several restaurants are located near Playa Forti, offering a variety of local and international cuisine. These restaurants provide stunning ocean views, making them perfect spots to enjoy a meal or a drink while taking in the scenery.
