Guardian of the Ancient Sea: The Kyrenia Shipwreck Museum

Perched inside the Gothic halls of Kyrenia Castle, the Shipwreck Museum preserves one of antiquity’s most evocative maritime relics. Discovered in 1965 during a storm by a sponge diver, the ancient Greek merchant ship—already elderly when it sank around 300 BC—is remarkably intact. Its Aleppo‑pine hull, sheathed in lead, remains conserved in a controlled, dimly lit chamber, allowing visitors to feel the ghost of its last voyage. The original cargo—over 400 amphorae from Rhodes, Kos, Samos (and trace finds of others), millstones, thousands of almonds, fishing weights and even personal utensils—speaks volumes about seafaring life in the eastern Mediterranean. Recovery and restoration spanned the late 1960s to mid‑1970s, culminating in the museum’s opening within the castle. Walking the platform above the wreck, framed by stone walls that once guarded crusaders and Venetians, visitors sense a collision of maritime and medieval layers of history. The hushed lighting, preserved timbers and cargo create a contemplative atmosphere where ancient commerce and human stories quietly converge.
