Discover more about Local Archaeological Museum of Marion - Arsinoe

Located in Polis Chrysochous, about 35km north of Paphos, the Local Archaeological Museum of Marion-Arsinoe displays artifacts from the ancient city-kingdom of Marion, later renamed Arsinoe in the 3rd century BC. The museum consists of two rooms and an atrium. Room I presents objects in chronological order, illustrating the area's historical development from the Neolithic to Medieval times. Room II features a rich collection of artifacts from the area's necropolis, highlighting the location and excavation of burial grounds. Marion was a significant commercial center during the Classical and Hellenistic periods, maintaining close ties with Athens. The city was conquered in 312 B.C. by Ptolemy I, and later renamed by Ptolemy II Philadelphus. Archaeological evidence suggests continuous habitation through the Roman, early Christian, and early Byzantine periods, with signs of destruction during the Arab raids of the 7th century A.D. Today, Polis Chrysochous stands on the site of ancient Arsinoe. The museum is part of the Aphrodite Cultural Route, offering an immersive experience into the region's historical layers.
